USA U-20s vs. Guatemala: Player Ratings and Even More Game Stats

A previously dominating team ends their run for the U-20 World Cup with a 2-1 loss to Guatemala in Guatemala City. The U-20s failed to take advantage of early opportunities and went into halftime down 1-0. They tied the game in the 66th but sloppy defense combined with a well placed shot gave Guatemala back the lead, which remained the final score.

The U-20s are, unfortunately, following in the footsteps of the predecessors in this game. They played respectable defense for most of the game but a couple of attacks were modeled after the stereotypical American defensive follies. Poor finishing early in the game and panicky offense towards the end of the game let a pressing offense go to waste. All of that to say, USA did manage several chances (as seen by the graphs) and had positive contributions at the end of the day. Not making the U-20 World Cup is inexcusable but not the end of the world for the promising young soccer players.

Player Ratings

Unfortunately I misplaced my notes on the individual players (I suppose that's what happens when you wait a month to write on an event...). However I have been working on a "Momentum Graph" so hopefully that will replace the absence.

Conclusion

The graphs show USA dominated the game in nearly all aspects but this is due to Guatemala's reluctance to push forward in the second half, which created the wave of opportunities for the Americans. Looking at the momentum graphs, you can see the large spikes where the goals took place (33', 66', 69') and where USA probably should have scored as well.
