MLS Goalie Rankings - Week 3

(Super late, sorry champs)

Gruenebaum soars to the top of the pack after a great performance in Columbus. Previous #1 Ryan Meara drops to the respectable two spot. Cannon jumps over Pickens and Ricketts rounds up the top five.

I started listing save-by-minute comments on here but not until halfway through the week. I through come graphs and pictures in for fun too. Enjoy.

The Goalies - Week 3

(+/-) - Away Goalie (+/-...mins)
(+/-) - Home Goalie (+/-...mins)

San Jose - 3 @ Toronto FC - 0

+13 - Jon Bush - (16.5/3.5...90') - Nice rebound game from the Busch. Does well between the pipes but coming out is a problem for Busch. The crazy wind did not help although he did better than Kocic.

-3.5 - Milos Kocic - (8.5/12...90') - Looked scared from the start.

Portland - 0 @ New England - 1

+7.5 - Troy Perkins (11.5/4…90') - Quick reaction on the save previous the goal but that's holdable and could have denied a second opportunity.

+4 - Matt Reis (6/2…90') - Sometimes he looks great then sometimes he looks like he doesn't want to be playing for New England.

Montreal - 0 @ Columbus - 2

+25.5 - Donovan Ricketts (29.5/4…90') - Wasn't thrilled he sat cold on the second goal. I'm not saying he could have saved it easily but I would at least like to see him go down. Besides that he was all over the place like Gruenebaum. Tons of big saves that kept it to 2-0 instead of 4-0, 5-0.

+32.5 - Andy Gruenebaum (34/1.5…90') - Wow what a keeper showcase from Gruenebaum and Ricketts. The two of them could hold all the save of the week nominees. Gruenebaum's performance could be the best out of all the MLS this year.

Philadelphia - 0 at Chicago - 1

+11.5 - Zac MacMath (19/7.5…90') - A rough to the season. Too many negative points but all this time in the fire will pay off.

14' Punches a shot right into the middle of the box. Great chance for a rebound (aka not good)
28' - I'm pretty sure that his hand goes over the goal-scoring shot. Could have been set a tad more.
40' - Awkwardly comes out and kind of looks like his body says "Oh why did I do this??" In the end he pushes the striker wide for a tough angle.
62' - Standard kick save
67' - Yes, shielded, but planted in the ground as well
89' - Big reflex save and good cover up. Got set well and really displayed his quickness.

+7.5 - Paolo Tornaghi (11.5/4…90') - A little out of sorts on the corner for a goal even if it was unstoppable.

82' - Stops a hard shot FK and jumps on the floating rebound. Solid all-around
84' - More of a reflex save with how much movement was on the ball. Great reflex save but makes it significantly harder on himself by throwing his hands at his knees first. Made it harder than it should have been

Chivas USA - 1 @ Real Salt Lake - 0

+21.5 - Dan Kennedy (25.5/4…90') - Stellar game

12' - Very jumpy
19 - All over the place on the cross
34' - Set for the shot and covers appropriate distance
32' - Smoothers a hard shot. Looking sharp on long shots
22' - Pushes out a mid-high shot. Explosive reaction.
60' - No points as the play was dead but Kennedy getting mad at the post-whistle shot-on-goal was a little over the top for me.
50' - In position for one of the worst shots of all-time
63' - Kennedy swipes a ball before Gil does but I typically don't advocate my goalies doing a 180 degree spin catch
85' - Incredibly slow on getting back
78' - Can't do a whole lot when your defender doesn't do his job. Tries to cover as much of the goal as he can.
92' - MVP save

+1 - Nick Rimando (8/7…90') - Unlucky and uncommon goal allowed

16' - Wasn't thrilled he started from inside the goal line and he really needs to hold that original shot. Somehow keeps out the second shot.
72' - Rare misplay by Rimando. Never makes a clean catch when he could have. Eyes off the ball? Can't tell

DC United - 0 @ Vancouver - 0

+1 - Joe Willis (7.5/6.5…90') - A spill stained his mild performance

30' - Love the effort despite it going wide
21' - Caught the ball
55' - Willis gets tripped up deservingly so for running that far out in traffic.
68' - Stays calm and in position.

+26 - Joe Cannon (26/0…90') - Our first perfect game?

4' - Textbook punch in traffic
32' - Sees the ball over
67' - Save of the year canidate
77' - Making DC look like DC Comics (aka he is making them look bad)
83' - Cannon says "No."

Colorado -1 @ New York - 4

+7 - Matt Pickens (17/10…90') - Sloppy defense for everyone from Colorado.

3' - After PKs, counterattacks are the hardest for a goalie to prepare for mentally. Henry picks up an easy ball and powers a ball past Pickens' foot. A tough save but his hands aren't in a great position to do anything. (1/2.5)
6' - Gets set about seven times, which makes him never set. His momentum carries him away from the ball. Cuts off the angle though. (1/3)
22' - No Robert Green here. (1/0)
51' - Looks rattled but covers the blast (2.5/1)
53' - Makes a great extension on an even better shot. Unfortunate. (4.5/0)
58' - Probably working up a sweat at this point. Maybe hold it? Still a solid save. (4/0.5)
89' - Gives no communication to cover the wide open Cooper then lays out pretty weak. (1/3)
93' - Stays in line well despite a defender getting turned in front of goal. (2/0)

+6 - Rick Meara (9/3…90') - New York attack makes Meara's day easy.

31' - Low save but Meara's length makes it easier. (4/0.5)
42' - Covers the FK (1.5/0)
58' - Smartly hits down a hard shot to hold it. (2/0)
67' - Easy (0.5/0)
77' - Doesn't need to be that far from the goal line with closing defenders. (0/2.5)
85' - Keeps it in bounds and in his hands, more importantly (1/0)

FC Dallas -1 @ Sporting Kansas City - 2

+13.5 - Kevin Hartman (24.5/9…90') - Responsible for the goals but also why the scoreline wasn't 4-1.

4' - Holds a low save. (2.5/0)
9' - Holds another low shot. (2/0)
20' - Mr. Low (3.5/0)
49' - Brashness doesn't work out this time... (0/4.5)
51' - Chases a shot wide. (1/0)
51' - Not the best PK shot but still a PK save (8/0)

68' - Doubly makes up for the previous goal. (7.5/0)
88' - Hartman takes a really bad angle at the ball. (0/4.5)

+0.5 - Jimmy Nielsen (1/0.5…90') - Zzzzz

9' - Covers high shot. (1/0)
25' - Not exactly thrilled Nielsen doesn't move but out of fairness it was this far away: (0/0.5)

The Goalies

(+/-) - Goalie (+/-...mins)

22 - Rick Meara (26/4…90) - The two loss goalkeeper tops the list. Displayed poor defense and looked surprised from the shot on the one-on-one but does his best to keep the score to only a 2-0 loss. Will get tested a lot this season.

19.5 - Matt Pickens (21/1.5…90) - Tried early and often. Colorado will owe many thanks for the season. The goal he is caught talking to Williams (I think) and is distracted from making a better attempt on the shot.

16.5 - Joe Willis (18/1.5…90) - A great effort in filling in for Hamid. Galaxy's offense proved too overwhelming for the Fire defense. I'd like to him get his hands up a bit more from distance. He's quick but doesn't need to make it harder on himself.

14 - Matt Reis (18/4…90) - I am so confused as to why he felt the need to destroy Sapong on the early challenge. I'm going out on a limb and saying Reis is going to have quite a discouraging season that might warrant some uninspired play.

13.5 - Tally Hall (15/1.5…90) - Big one-on-one save in the 61' plus various action let him outplay brash Busch.

13.5 - Joe Cannon (13.5/0…41) - Huge save by tipping a bending ball over the bar after stopping a dangerous one-on-one. The injury stopped him from finishing the game but 13.5 pts isn't bad.

10 - Nick Rimando (10/0…90) - So smart. Rimando does a great job defending Henry's bike. Before Henry hits the shot, Rimando starts dropping back to defend it and covers a lot of ground in not a lot of time.

8 - Paolo Tornaghi (10/2…90) - A little out of sorts on the corner for a goal even if it was unstoppable.

7 - Troy Perkins (8.5/1.5…90) - Quick reaction on the save previous the goal but that's holdable and could have denied a second opportunity.

5.5 - Jimmy Nielsen (5.5/0…90) - In position to have a comfortable season

5 - Milos Kocic (8.5/3.5…90) - Didn't like that he went for a kick save in the scuffle previous the first goal. Collapsing on the ball would have removed the danger. Not quite sure how the second goal slipped through but it definitely wasn't played that far around him. Looks like Kocic was just looking to block with his body and not by saving it. Granted all his goals were very close range but I still think he could use his hands more effectively. He does make a very nice save at the end of the game (6.5 pts) to bump him up to 5.

4.5 - Brad Knighton (4.5/0…49) - Very active. Love his readiness. A great debut (?)

3.5 - Donovan Ricketts (5.5/2…90) - His wreckless style works sometimes and other times it doesn't.

3.5 - Josh Saunders (4/0.5…90) - A nice tip over and conceded possibly the Goal of the Week in a confidence game for him.

1 - Kevin Hartman (5/4…90) - Things Hartman loves to do: chew gum and punch the ball. We're welcome to blame the defender for literally passing the ball back to Nagbe but Hartman's 10 yard skyscraper hit wasn't great nor his fall-over-the-wrong-way strategy of coming out.

0.5 - Dan Kennedy (1/0.5…90) - Eh.

0 - Andy Gruenebaum (0/0…0) - DNP

0 - Bill Hamid (0/0…0) - DNP

0 - Michael Gspurning (0.5/0.5…90) - He played?

-2 - Zac MacMath (3.5/5.5…90) - He's confident in the 18 and hopefully he won't lose that. The first goal could have been avoided by tipping or punching the ball to clear it. He guesses a tad on the second goal but the striker had a wicked wind up that fooled MacMath. Inches away from an awesome foot save.

-5 - Jon Busch (5/10…90) - Out of control. Busch's crash into Ching that set up the PK was a bit absurd on Busch's part. He shows the soccer-version of alligator arms by taking his eyes off the ball way to early. He actually does the same thing later in the game as is very lucky to not get another PK called on him.

MLS Goalie Rankings - Week 1

I was trying to think of a fun way to follow the MLS, write about it, and give some sort of ranking system (because, clearly, everyone loves rankings). I decided to track the goalies progress over the season. We'll see if I follow it through.

MLS does a pretty good job with highlights, which I'll be largely dependent on as I don't really have the time to watch twenty 90 minute games a week. The ultimate goal is to chart the goalies who do the most good. Not necessarily the best, as we can all go onto FIFA 12 to look at the ratings, but the goalie who saves their team the most.

On every play I'll award points that range from -10 (bad) to 10 (glorious). These points are really on my whim as I'll give a lot of points for covering the goal with a huge dive (but not touching the shot that goes wide) and not a lot of points for a save that is shot straight at the goalie. I'll tally them up over time. For a frame a reference:

Less than 0 - Bad
0 to 10 - Not tested or a mixed game
10 to 15 - Good game
15 and over - Great game

The Goalies

20 - Nick Rimando (Real Salt Lake) - Week 1 at Los Angeles - Two great minutes by Rimando in this game. In the 27' minute he covers a shot that hits the cross bar, saves a low bike, gets back up quickly to discourage Buddle from shooting, which ends the attack. (9.5 points in all) in the 87th he keeps his composure as the ball floats around the box the entire time. It amounts to a great punch by Rimando under pressure followed by a desperate kick save as he's getting back into position. Overall I think he has a tendency to over-adjust his positioning. Sometimes this works out and other times he is caught moving. I think he was a step or two away from being set and saving the goal.

18.5 - Rick Meara (New York) - Week 1 at FC Dallas - The promising keeper wants to play and FC Dallas let him have it. A great save on Perez's one-timer. Did great coming out multiple times and made Villar take a shot that the only way it would be a goal is if it was of GOTW-caliber.

11 - Matt Pickens (Colorado) - Week 1 vs. Columbus - Came up big when they needed him. The Save of the Week candidate (where he pushed the shot over the bar) wasn't as near as good as his lower 90 save in the 29th minute. Not positive on if that was going in but he covered it regardless. The push over the bar I'm fairly sure he could have caught as it wasn't that high and then proceeding cross I know he could have dealt with better.

4 - Donovan Ricketts (Montreal) - Week 1 vs. Vancouver - Looked incredibly uncomfortable in the back and, not positive on this, seems to not be having the best communication with his defense. Makes a great save in the final minutes on getting low and that kept him from getting negative points.

4 - Bill Hamid (DC United) - Week 1 vs. Sporting Kansas City - Didn't like his late reaction against Sapong's shot/cross. It's about halfway to goal then Hamid reacts and doesn't cover that much ground because of it. He handles a low shot (with a possible deflection well). His Save of the Week nominee honestly looked really, really cool but a second look warrants negative points. Hamid turns a poor shot/easy collapse save into a spectacular kick save wide because he jumps to... well I'm not sure why he jumps a foot off the ground. I'm confused why Hamid didn't at least lay out on the stoppage timed goal. Yes it was in a crowd and yes it happened quickly but that doesn't mean a well-positioned and set Hamid can't lay out for it.

3.5 - Andy Gruenebaum (Columbus) - Week 1 at Colorado - Did great to cut down the angle on Cumming's breakaway in the 20th minute. Else, he had time to collect the cross to Moor. Not an easy catch to make, admittedly, but that's one he needs to make. He definitely has the athleticism and we'll see about the Goalie IQ. Couldn't do anything on the second goal other than chew out his defense for giving him that space.

3 - Zac MacMath (PHI) - Week 1 at Portland - The sloppy first goal conceded is the first memory from the game but in all honestly Portland was outplaying them and showed it with their two more additional goals. Before the first goal, MacMath commanded the box and afterwords he made a sick save that was so good I illegally downloaded this video to show the three people who read this blog:

Not great quality but it's somewhat redeeming for his earlier mistake considering he makes a very good point blank save from a crabwalk position.

2.5 - Jimmy Nielsen (Sporting Kansas City) - Week 1 at Chicago - KC's defense made this a cakewalk for the weirdest looking goalie in the MLS. Points for simple saves and correct positioning.

2.0 - Troy Perkins (POR) - Week 1 vs Philadelphia - Held down the fort.

1.5 - Jon Busch (San Jose) - Week 1 vs. New England - Rarely tested. Nothing worth writing about.

-0.5 - Tally Hall (Houston) - Week 1 at Chivas USA - Kennedy hogged the action.

-1 - Joe Cannon (Vancouver) - Week 1 at Montreal - Largely untested and when he was he managed to lumbered his best around. Yeah he gets the clean sheet against Montreal but he also could have been given a bed sheet for the nap he took back there.

-2.5 - Matt Reis (New England) - Week 1 at San Jose - A little out of position and behind the play on the goal. A couple more chances and he still looked slow on the play.

-3 - Kevin Hartman (FC Dallas) - Week 1 vs. New York - Minus 1.5 for napping on the free kick and -1.5 on the goal. Honestly it was great placement by Cooper but a needless challenge by Hartman. Cooper is either going to have to volley a ball over his shoulder at a bad angle with an oncoming defense or look to lay it off if Hartman stays.

-3.5 - Saunders (Los Angeles) - Week 1 vs. Real Salt Late - Unfortunate that all his interactions were from tight pressure. An own goal and two short range shots made it three goals. His reflex was slow on the one-on-one and he actually gets a hand on the last one but can't keep it out.

Did Not Play This Week:

Michael Gspurning (Seattle)
Milos Kocic (Toronto)

Overall Rankings

-3 - Kevin Hartman (FCD) - (-3)
-3.5 - Josh Saunders (LA) - (-3.5)

And lastly, the top three worst hairstyles in the MLS:

3. Steven Lenhart. Maybe it's just a joke. Hopefully it's just a joke.

2. Andrew Jacobson. I was going to put a picture up of it but his bleached hair will blind you similar to staring into a lighthouse momentarily. Here's a video of him in action. If you're willing to bare the close up of a man who looks like he stuck his head into a recently used toilet you may skip ahead to 3:10.

1. Sebastian Velasquez. Watch him ecstatically celebrate his goa-err... his created own goal. I imagine after Beckerman his hair has just become another goat in the flock.

USMNT Hopefuls vs Olympic Team

With the addition of their late 20th member, Caleb Porter and the United States Soccer Federation finalized their lineup for the upcoming Olympic qualifying games next week. The fortunate gentlemen may be seen here.

I decided to compare the lineup to my USMNT Hopefuls. First I eliminated all over-aged playesr. This was a little more difficult than I originally thought because I wasn't quite sure where to draw the line. The oldest chosen competitor is Ike Opara with a birthday on February 21st, who is over 23 years old.

Second I added all the players' projected rating to their current rating to get an overall score. I threw Brek Shea, Freddy Adu, and Juan Agudelo back in the mix accordingly as they all have more than nine caps, thus not qualifying them for the Hopeful USMNTers. I sorted the list and the top twenty names were:

(bolded names were chosen for the U23s)
1. Bill Hamid - 147
2. Bobby Wood - 146
3. Brek Shea - 145.5
4. Juan Agudelo - 145
5. Dilly Duka - 145
6. Timothy Chandler - 145
7. Sean Johnson - 144.5
8. Mikkel Diskerud - 144
9. Josh Gatt - 144
10. Kelyn Rowe - 144
11. Danny Williams - 144
12. Corey Hertzog - 143.5
13. Joseph Gyau - 143.5
14. Fredy Adu - 142.5
15. Joe Corona - 142.5
16. Perry Kitchen - 142.5
17. Jack McInerney - 142.5
18. Terrence Boyd - 141.5
19. Amobi Okugo - 141.5
20. Greg Garza - 141.5

12 out of 20, not too shabby, I suppose. Especially considering a lot of factors. Obviously I don't have the luxury of the inside scoop on every player that Porter does. Also, Wood and Duka are dealing with injuries right now, making them a wasted spot on the team. Porter also hinted at the trouble of getting players released for qualifying games, which would apply to Chandler and Williams, I would think. (It's a long interview but look under the " On how he keeps in contact with age-eligible players in Europe who are not in this camp" reply.)

Kelyn Rowe seems like an interested omission as he has been highly rated for years and been involved with the youth program for some time. The other three (Hertzog, McInerney, and Garza) I heard no news about on expectations to make the team but all have been involved with the youth program as well. At the end of the day, I think it's safe to say that Porter had a hard job in only picking twenty.

My top twenty list only has four defenders in it and the next two defenders on the list were Morales and Valentin. Valentin made the the cut and Morales was a likely candidate to fill the twentieth slot but perhaps he had trouble getting released from his club. A lot of speculation, to say the least.

Here are the next 30, which includes the other eight that were not listed above. (The eight are in bold.):

21. Daniel Potts - 141
22. Teal Bunbury - 140.5
23. Sebastian Lletget - 140.5
24. Luis Gil - 140.5
25. Alfredo Morales - 140
26. Zarek Valentin - 139.5
27. Andrew Oliver - 139.5
28. Tony Taylor - 139
29. Eder Arreola - 139
30. Omar Salgado - 139
31. Jared Jeffrey - 138.5
32. Villyan Bijev - 138.5
33. Marc Pelosi - 138.5
34. Ben Speas - 138
35. Danny Mwanga - 138
36. Zac MacMath - 138
37. Michael Stephens - 137.5
38. Jorge Villafana - 137.5
39. Billy Schuler - 137.5
40. Andrew Wenger - 137.5
41. Esteban Rodriguez - 137.5
42. Alejandro Guido - 137.5
43. Ike Opara - 137
44. Will Bruin - 137
45. Sheanon Williams - 137
46. Gale Agbossoumonde - 137
47. Raul Mendiola - 137
48. DeAndre Robinson - 137
49. Tristan Bowen - 136.5
50. Kofi Sarkodie - 136.5

The 30-50 list is much less impressive.
I haven't seen too much play from Taylor, Jeffrey, Stephens, Villafana, Opara, and Sarkodie so that could be why my rating on them is so low. I would be more than happy to bump them up the list.

Lastly, this is awesome:

USMNT Hopefuls - March 2012

A lot of movement on the US Soccer front. Of course our first love here at Soccer, Subjectively is fashion so we'll address that first. The new away jerseys were released to mix reception. Personally, I'm not a huge fan as the shirt looks like a sweater vest with an white undershirt but I do like the subtle sash.

Not the worst jersey by far but I do have high hopes for the Waldo home jersey.

Moving on to less important stuff, here's the March release of Hopeful USMNTers. (Some new faces on the top twenty!)

Latest info on players...

- Wood is still recovering from an injury. A lot of small injuries and his club is taking it slow.

- Hamid received his first cap against Venezuela on January 21st. He has displayed brightly for the U23s and started the first half against Mexico on the 29th. He has a big save here at 0:50 and shows good communication for the entirety of the play. He handles a cross proficiently at 1:15 as well.

- Lichaj has been getting full games with the AVL reserves as of mid-February. He also is returning from an injury.

- Gyau has also been training with the U23s and seems a lock for the Olympic team.

- Rowe, McInerney, Hertzog, Duka, Kitchen, and Gil are getting ready to kick off the MLS season. Rowe looks to make a splash with New England as a rookie while McInerney and Hertzog fight for playing time in a crowded field. McInerney collected 562 minutes last year while Hertzog only picked up 32. Kitchen has the most stable position in his club but Duka and Gil are young stars looking to build off last year.

- Chandler has been playing well for Nurnberg.

- Gatt's coaches at Molde did not release him to play with the U23s but he was not upset at the decision. He agreed he need to rehabilitate to get back to 100%. He does have a tough decision to make in the future as the Olympics and Champions League will conflict. He answered in an interview, "The Olympics is a big thing for Americans, and it would be an honor to represent my nation in London. But Molde is my employer, og the CL qualifiers is something I had never even dreamt of doing as at 20. It's up to the club. I will accept both scenarios."

- Oliver just finished training with Tab Ramos and the U20s.

- Potts is training with England's U18s in preparation for the upcoming game against Poland on the 7th. Potts has not stated which country he holds preference with but with the shallow pool at LB, Potts could be an asset to the '14 WC team.

- Johnson played the second half against Mexico. A nice save from a redirection here at 3:10 and collides with the captained Ike Opara at 4:30 after a scramble in the box.

- You'll miss Diskerud's second goal against Mexico if you blink so make sure to tape your eyes open to see it. He also sent in the cross to Agudelo who scored a minute before Diskerud did. He is taking a Q&A session at BigSoccer.com.

- Garza has been finding sparse minutes for Tijuana, most recently the last eleven minutes on March the 2nd. Another future-LB option for the US.

- Pelosi had a nice write up on him by Youth US Soccer-expert Brian Sciaretta. I've read that Liverpool is glad he is part of the program and the fans like the American as well.

- Lletget made the squad but didn't play against Mexico with the U23s. I haven't heard a lot of him recently. He's on the reserve squad with Potts at West Ham, where center back George John just recently ended his trial to go back to FC Dallas. Hopefully John and Lletget have had a positive influence on Potts to consider USA more highly.

- Corona pulled off a nice bike here at 0:52 and went the full 90 against Mexico. He picked up a goal on the 26th for Tijuana from nicely placed cross (start at 0:35).

Salgado and Valentin are starting up the MLS in Canada. Valentin will be with his new club in Montreal while Salgado returns to Vancouver. Last I heard on Mendiola is that he is back in Los Angeles. There were rumors of being tied to LA Galaxy's reserve squad but I haven't seen anything official yet.

Fabian Johnson (3), Danny Williams (5), and Terrance Boyd (1) all received caps against Italy. And should continue to climb up the Hopeful USMNTers list.

On a last note, Claudio Reyna and Tony Meola were inducted into the US Hall of Fame. Reyna is one of three Americans to ever make the World Cup all-tournament team and Meola was the starting goalkeeper for America's first two post-1950 World Cup squads. Some players that did not make the cut were century-capped striker Joe-Max Moore (57.84), iconic hairdo Carlos Valderrama (43.14), and prolific MLS scorer Jason Kreis (30.39), all of which I feel like have done enough for US soccer to be rewarded with a trip to the Hall.
