MLS Goalie Rankings - Week 3

(Super late, sorry champs)

Gruenebaum soars to the top of the pack after a great performance in Columbus. Previous #1 Ryan Meara drops to the respectable two spot. Cannon jumps over Pickens and Ricketts rounds up the top five.

I started listing save-by-minute comments on here but not until halfway through the week. I through come graphs and pictures in for fun too. Enjoy.

The Goalies - Week 3

(+/-) - Away Goalie (+/-...mins)
(+/-) - Home Goalie (+/-...mins)

San Jose - 3 @ Toronto FC - 0

+13 - Jon Bush - (16.5/3.5...90') - Nice rebound game from the Busch. Does well between the pipes but coming out is a problem for Busch. The crazy wind did not help although he did better than Kocic.

-3.5 - Milos Kocic - (8.5/12...90') - Looked scared from the start.

Portland - 0 @ New England - 1

+7.5 - Troy Perkins (11.5/4…90') - Quick reaction on the save previous the goal but that's holdable and could have denied a second opportunity.

+4 - Matt Reis (6/2…90') - Sometimes he looks great then sometimes he looks like he doesn't want to be playing for New England.

Montreal - 0 @ Columbus - 2

+25.5 - Donovan Ricketts (29.5/4…90') - Wasn't thrilled he sat cold on the second goal. I'm not saying he could have saved it easily but I would at least like to see him go down. Besides that he was all over the place like Gruenebaum. Tons of big saves that kept it to 2-0 instead of 4-0, 5-0.

+32.5 - Andy Gruenebaum (34/1.5…90') - Wow what a keeper showcase from Gruenebaum and Ricketts. The two of them could hold all the save of the week nominees. Gruenebaum's performance could be the best out of all the MLS this year.

Philadelphia - 0 at Chicago - 1

+11.5 - Zac MacMath (19/7.5…90') - A rough to the season. Too many negative points but all this time in the fire will pay off.

14' Punches a shot right into the middle of the box. Great chance for a rebound (aka not good)
28' - I'm pretty sure that his hand goes over the goal-scoring shot. Could have been set a tad more.
40' - Awkwardly comes out and kind of looks like his body says "Oh why did I do this??" In the end he pushes the striker wide for a tough angle.
62' - Standard kick save
67' - Yes, shielded, but planted in the ground as well
89' - Big reflex save and good cover up. Got set well and really displayed his quickness.

+7.5 - Paolo Tornaghi (11.5/4…90') - A little out of sorts on the corner for a goal even if it was unstoppable.

82' - Stops a hard shot FK and jumps on the floating rebound. Solid all-around
84' - More of a reflex save with how much movement was on the ball. Great reflex save but makes it significantly harder on himself by throwing his hands at his knees first. Made it harder than it should have been

Chivas USA - 1 @ Real Salt Lake - 0

+21.5 - Dan Kennedy (25.5/4…90') - Stellar game

12' - Very jumpy
19 - All over the place on the cross
34' - Set for the shot and covers appropriate distance
32' - Smoothers a hard shot. Looking sharp on long shots
22' - Pushes out a mid-high shot. Explosive reaction.
60' - No points as the play was dead but Kennedy getting mad at the post-whistle shot-on-goal was a little over the top for me.
50' - In position for one of the worst shots of all-time
63' - Kennedy swipes a ball before Gil does but I typically don't advocate my goalies doing a 180 degree spin catch
85' - Incredibly slow on getting back
78' - Can't do a whole lot when your defender doesn't do his job. Tries to cover as much of the goal as he can.
92' - MVP save

+1 - Nick Rimando (8/7…90') - Unlucky and uncommon goal allowed

16' - Wasn't thrilled he started from inside the goal line and he really needs to hold that original shot. Somehow keeps out the second shot.
72' - Rare misplay by Rimando. Never makes a clean catch when he could have. Eyes off the ball? Can't tell

DC United - 0 @ Vancouver - 0

+1 - Joe Willis (7.5/6.5…90') - A spill stained his mild performance

30' - Love the effort despite it going wide
21' - Caught the ball
55' - Willis gets tripped up deservingly so for running that far out in traffic.
68' - Stays calm and in position.

+26 - Joe Cannon (26/0…90') - Our first perfect game?

4' - Textbook punch in traffic
32' - Sees the ball over
67' - Save of the year canidate
77' - Making DC look like DC Comics (aka he is making them look bad)
83' - Cannon says "No."

Colorado -1 @ New York - 4

+7 - Matt Pickens (17/10…90') - Sloppy defense for everyone from Colorado.

3' - After PKs, counterattacks are the hardest for a goalie to prepare for mentally. Henry picks up an easy ball and powers a ball past Pickens' foot. A tough save but his hands aren't in a great position to do anything. (1/2.5)
6' - Gets set about seven times, which makes him never set. His momentum carries him away from the ball. Cuts off the angle though. (1/3)
22' - No Robert Green here. (1/0)
51' - Looks rattled but covers the blast (2.5/1)
53' - Makes a great extension on an even better shot. Unfortunate. (4.5/0)
58' - Probably working up a sweat at this point. Maybe hold it? Still a solid save. (4/0.5)
89' - Gives no communication to cover the wide open Cooper then lays out pretty weak. (1/3)
93' - Stays in line well despite a defender getting turned in front of goal. (2/0)

+6 - Rick Meara (9/3…90') - New York attack makes Meara's day easy.

31' - Low save but Meara's length makes it easier. (4/0.5)
42' - Covers the FK (1.5/0)
58' - Smartly hits down a hard shot to hold it. (2/0)
67' - Easy (0.5/0)
77' - Doesn't need to be that far from the goal line with closing defenders. (0/2.5)
85' - Keeps it in bounds and in his hands, more importantly (1/0)

FC Dallas -1 @ Sporting Kansas City - 2

+13.5 - Kevin Hartman (24.5/9…90') - Responsible for the goals but also why the scoreline wasn't 4-1.

4' - Holds a low save. (2.5/0)
9' - Holds another low shot. (2/0)
20' - Mr. Low (3.5/0)
49' - Brashness doesn't work out this time... (0/4.5)
51' - Chases a shot wide. (1/0)
51' - Not the best PK shot but still a PK save (8/0)

68' - Doubly makes up for the previous goal. (7.5/0)
88' - Hartman takes a really bad angle at the ball. (0/4.5)

+0.5 - Jimmy Nielsen (1/0.5…90') - Zzzzz

9' - Covers high shot. (1/0)
25' - Not exactly thrilled Nielsen doesn't move but out of fairness it was this far away: (0/0.5)

Did Not Plays

0 - Tally Hall (HOU)

0 - Josh Saunders (LAG)

0 - Michael Gspurning (SEA)
